Project Phoenix

Following the horrific 2020 bushfires which destroyed a large part of Australian land and families, this home — like many others across the country — was partially burnt down to ashes. The aim was to rebuild the burnt part and turn it into a beautiful living space made to entertain its guests, while making the best of the surroundings.

Our Process: From Knockdown to Completion

01

Damage Assessment

The state of the house made it difficult to safely access and assess the extent of the fire damage. A careful staged demolition was required before structural scope could be determined.

02

BAL 29 Fire Rating Compliance

The new structure had to meet BAL 29 fire attack level requirements. The entire deck and pergola structure was built out of steel to comply, with all connections welded and modified to match the new design.

03

Deck Construction — 1km of Hardwood

A new, enormous deck was constructed using over 1 kilometre of hardwood planks — one of the most demanding physical elements of the project, requiring precision laying and structural support.

04

Roof Lift & Delta Panel Replacement

Half of the roof had to be lifted and replaced using self-supporting delta panels — an operation requiring a crane on site for three separate lifts due to the sloped land and roof height.

05

Hybrid Steel & Timber Frame

The rebuilt structure used a hybrid frame of steel and timber, combining fire-rated structural steel where required by BAL 29 with timber framing in the areas retained from the original build.

Project Challenges

Upon arrival and demolition we came across many structural elements that needed to be rebuilt as the fire had damaged them beyond repair, making them unsafe.

The whole deck and pergola structure had to be built out of steel to comply with BAL 29 fire rating requirements. Our trained team welded new to existing and modified some existing structures to match the new design.

On some jobs, everything can be carried by hand — but this job, with its very high roof and sloped land, required a crane on site for three separate parts of the project.

Results: A Year-Round Comfortable Home

Full structural rebuild completed in 3 months
BAL 29 fire rating achieved across all new external structures
1km of hardwood deck planks laid and finished
Self-supporting delta roof panels installed via on-site crane
Beautiful entertaining space restored from fire-damaged structure

Project Outcome

The completed rebuild transformed a fire-ravaged structure into a beautiful living and entertaining space. The new BAL 29-rated deck, enormous hardwood pergola, and self-supporting delta roof panels were delivered in 3 months — giving the homeowners a home that is both structurally safe and visually stunning.
